Studied composition at the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow (Gnessins-institut), then attended post-graduate courses (again with Aleksandr Chugayev) at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow from 1983-85. Nikolaev is a member of the Russian Composers' Union, the Association of Contemporary Music in Russia (ACM), the Theremin Center in Moscow, and the Association of Electroacoustic Music of Russia. The output of Nikolaev includes mostly stage, orchestral, chamber, vocal, and electroacoustic works that have been performed in Europe and the USA. He is a regular participant in many new music festivals in Russia and abroad, including the Alternativa, the Moscow Autumn and the Moscow Forum, “Pythian games” in St Petersburg, festivals of Russian music in Iova, Seatlle, San Francisco, Vienna. 1997 and 2001 he was invited to work in the studio of IMEB (Bourges). In the 2002 his ballet Gold of the Narts was premiered by the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Among the compositions Nikolaev’s are also the music for dramatical pieces (more then 20) and for several fiction, documental and cartoon films. The major honors of Nikolaev include Fourth Prize in the Witold Lutoslawski Competition in Warsaw (1991, for Concerto for Orchestra) and First Prize of the Lili Boulanger Memorial Fund in Boston (1992, for Concerto for Orchestra, Autumn Fantasy and Music for Piano and String Quartet). The piece Gutta-percha music was awarded the Audience’s Prize at the festival “Pythian games” (2009). Vladimir NIKOLAYEV composer
